Rented the book and received it in bad condition. No way to contact anyone about condition. Broken binder and wrinkled pages. Able to complete class, but when returned it was rejected for damage that was already there. Charged the account for full payment without prior notice ... thank God there was funds in the account to avoid an overdraft. Pictures were taken when received and no one to send them to for dispute. Psychology From Inquiry to Understanding Scott O Lilienfeld Steven Jay Lynn Laura L Namy Nancy J Woolf 9781256287797 Books Reviews
The price is cheap, but the book is beat, ripped, with written in, gravely highlighted, pages loose. Can't return it now because school started; therefore, I need it.
Was exactly what I needed for my Intro to Psychology class. Has no torn pages; very little highlighting in it, which I love because I do not typically highlight in my books. I annotate on another sheet of paper.
As for the book in general, I feel that the author is actually speaking to me, rather than at me. There are also some neat mind tricks.
I didn't realize that this was just a three-hole punched print out. I would have rathered the bound version, especially since the paper this is printed on is so fragile that it easily tears. I'm pretty gentle on books and this one is hard to keep in good shape. As for the content in this manual, it's phenomenal.
I think this was a great price for the book! After shipping and taxes, I paid about $33, which was really great!!! The book was in good condition and it's a very interesting book, actually. I really enjoy reading the chapters. What surprised me is that I got a hardcover copy and not a paperback. I don't have a problem with that at all, but I guess I missed that in the description. Other than that, great price and great book! Oh, and shipping was fast! Great seller!
I can't specifically recall any of these instances, but there's actually typos and grammatical mistakes in this textbook. Plural mistakes.
That, and more than once my instructor stopped to say "this is wrong," while reviewing it.
Let me emphasize this, I purchased Psychology From Inquiry to Understanding for my intro to Psych course at my college. I can only speak for myself when I say this, but to me, mistakes in a college-level textbook are absolutely unacceptable. Especially considering they make new ones almost yearly for upwards of $100 each.
If buying textbooks wasn't directly correlated to succeeding in college, I would absolutely recommend nobody buy this.
In fact, the only redeemable thing about this is the price. $20 beats the heck out of the $100+ my local bookstore wanted for it.
2/5
So I understand that sometimes we have no choice of what textbook we need for certain classes...this unfortunately was my case. I was required to have this textbook for my Psych 101 class, and although it provides you with a lot of information, it had the reoccuring tendency to be overwhelming at times. It had so many marginal notes and side notes to keep up with. I understand that it is helpful to show how some things overlap from chapter to chapter and it's useful to show the connection, but not on most of the lines on the page. Thats when things tend to go overboard. If you have a choice, I would recommend a text that simplifies the facts so that your not bombared with information you may not necessarily need.
I used this book last year for my intro to social and abnormal psychology class. I was expecting a challenge after a difficult biological psychology course, but this text turned out to be quite the opposite of a healthy challenge.
I'm not a fan of social psychology at all, so I may be a bit biased, but I felt that this textbook was a particularly poor example of good social psychology. It almost felt like the authors were talking down to the readers; they used overly-simplistic explanations for even simple concepts.
The extended metaphors in this text were ridiculous. Personally, metaphors don't help me much to picture psychological concepts; even so, it felt like I was reading more metaphors than actual theories or facts sometimes.
The thing that probably bothered me the most out of this text was the amount of racially and stereotypically-based examples used and studies cited. The text is obsessed with comparing "collectivist" and "individualist" cultures. I can see how this parallel is interesting and can be useful in illustrating psychological concepts, but I find it disgustingly stereotypical and extremely superficial. As a book trying to spread "social" psychology, it is perpetuating false social ideas about race and culture by trying to put them in a light of "scientific" studies.
